Relationships are hard to start and even more difficult to maintain. Trying to start a relationship is a game all in itself. We go back and forth trying to guess the feelings of another person and we try our hardest to find the signs that it's right to tell a person that we have feelings for them. Brisbane-based Filipina Australian Bedroom Pop singer Kayla Man-Lui who goes by the name Sleepless Sophie, speaks on the tribulations of confessing feelings on her latest track titled "She (redux)".
The track "She (redux)" is a song written in a conversation style of lyricism about two people, with one of them asking what feelings the other person has while the other keeps it inside. The persona being spoken to in this track is scared to confess their true feeling—afraid to change the dynamics of the current relationship they have, where the friendship might then have conflict and awkwardness. It's a situation where almost all of us have been in at one point in time, and it's a feeling all too relatable.
Sleepless Sophie describes herself as a mix of different genres including Indie-Pop, Bedroom-Pop, and Synth-Pop if all of these were put together. The production on this track is a reflection of these blends of different styles bringing a style that can be described as having that feeling of Lo-Fi, Arcade, and bedroom-influenced sounds. The song was also co-produced by the artist herself alongside Jeric Santos who goes by Biking In Tokyo, who also did the mixing and mastering for the track.
Sleepless Sophie is an artist who has been around both the Philippine and Australian music scene for quite some time, posting on SoundCloud since 2016. She has been invited to multiple intimate, university, and open mic events around Manila and Brisbane, Usually, in these tightly knitted events where we can find artists having that similar sound to her. She's been mostly doing music underground, but since she has taken this formally just this year, she has already reached top Spotify playlists like Fresh Finds Philippines.
There are not too many Filipino artists that come from genres like Lo-Fi, and fewer that mix in different genres like Sleepless Sophie does.
